A Brief Discussion on Ziwei Dou Shu

A Brief Discussion on Ziwei Dou Shu

(This article discusses ideas and meanings of traditional Chinese numerology culture. Some Chinese concepts carry unique meanings hard to fully express in English, so this article is written in Chinese. Thank you for your understanding.)

1. What is Ziwei Dou Shu

  • Ziwei Dou Shu is known as the No.1 Divine Numerology. Together with the Four Pillars of Destiny (Bazi), they are the two main systems of traditional Chinese fate study. They share the same origin but developed into separate branches.
  • Both are built on the ideas of the unity of heaven and humanity, yin-yang and the Five Elements. They draw from ancient star study and I Ching, yet they view fate from different angles:
    • Four Pillars of Destiny (Bazi): looks at your innate nature and what life experiences you will meet.
    • Ziwei Dou Shu: looks at how external timing and environment affect you.
  • Ziwei Dou Shu creates a fate chart based on your birth year, month, day and hour. The chart has 12 palaces covering all areas of life:
Life, Sibling, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friend, Career, Property, Blessing, Parents.
  • It judges good/bad signs through star combinations. Four Transformations (Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji) control changes. It is good for analyzing life cycles, relationships and outside environment trends.

2. Heaven, Earth and Human (Three Essentials)

  • Ancient people believed success needs three parts: heaven’s timing, geographic advantage, human effort. None can be missing.
    • Heaven’s timing: covered by Ziwei Dou Shu, to predict trends, chances and dangers.
    • Geographic advantage: Yangzhai (home feng shui), adjusting your living space.
    • Human effort: your choices, self-cultivation, health care (TCM). This is how people seek good luck and avoid disasters.
  • Among the three, geographic adjustment and human effort account for two-thirds. They can reduce the harm of bad luck.

3. Can fate be changed?

  • We can adjust the severity of events, but the main life theme stays; the big life cycle cannot be rewritten.
  • Example: A divination shows a car accident will happen within one month.
    • If you prepare and adjust your living and behavior, the incident may still occur, but damage will be much lighter.
    • Without preparation, it may turn into a serious disaster.
  • We can reduce the loss of hardships, but cannot escape all troubles forever. Small hidden factors will still change outcomes. Even Zhuge Liang, very wise, failed to finish his northern campaign.

4. What is the purpose of divination?

  • Core goal: seek fortune and avoid harm.
  • It does not give a fixed final result. It helps you see life cycles and pick the path with the least cost, saving your energy and resources.
  • Life cycles change every 10 years. Each decade has its own challenges.
    • Example: Age 20–30: stars show barriers for career. If you keep fighting blindly, you burn out and achieve little. When your prime period (30–40) arrives, you have no energy left.
    • Better plan: 20–30: slow down career ambition, learn and save strength. When good timing comes, you seize opportunities and reach higher goals.
  • The value of numerology: know when to wait and when to act. Do not waste energy fighting against big trends.

5. About superstition and science

  • Many regard numerology as superstition. Modern science is only a system to explain things within human current knowledge. Science values practice, and many phenomena still lack full scientific explanations.
  • Two attitudes:
    • To doubt something without full knowledge is sensible.
    • To claim it is completely fake without learning it is a hasty judgment.
  • Opinions ≠ Truth. Truth is universally agreed. Opinions vary from person to person. We can respect different views for traditional culture not proven false.

6. The state of “accomplishing all things”

  • Mastering heaven, earth and humanity does NOT mean you can control everything.
  • It is the sage’s state: understand astronomy, geography and human affairs. The heart can hold the whole world.
  • You know how to face difficulties. After trying your best, you will not be upset by results. Outer troubles exist, but your mind stays peaceful. Your inner world is your own heaven and earth.

Note: Ziwei Dou Shu and Four Pillars of Destiny belong to traditional folk numerology. They are ancient models for people to understand human-environment relations. They have no scientifically proven predictive power. They are only for cultural research, and cannot be the only basis for major life decisions.
